In Augusta, work on replacing the Western Avenue Bridge continues to move forward rapidly. This project addresses a critical transportation corridor and is designed to improve traffic flow, safety, and long-term durability. The existing structure, which had reached the end of its service life, is being replaced with prefabricated bridge units (PBUs) fabricated in the Reed & Reed casting yard. This Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) solution allows for a shortened construction phase and minimized interference with traffic.

Before demolition work could begin, Reed & Reed designed and built a three-lane temporary detour bridge carrying Western Avenue traffic over busy I-95. Once traffic is shifted onto the new bridge, crews will remove the temporary bridge and complete final paving, landscaping and clean-up prior to the June 2026 contract completion date.
The new Western Avenue Bridge will enhance safety and efficiency for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, while providing the region with a modern, low-maintenance structure capable of serving the community for decades.
