Project Description
In June 2008, Reed & Reed was awarded the contract to replace the existing 600 foot long bridge over the Kennebec River with an unconventional concrete tied arch bridge. The new structure is comprised of two 135-ft approach spans flanking a 300-ft concrete tied arch main span. There is only one other of these uniquely designed structures in the United States. The project finished one month before the November 1, 2011 contract completion date. Work included the following: design, construction and maintenance of a 610 ft. temporary detour bridge; design and installation of temporary false work installed under the existing concrete arch bridge for demolition; two river cofferdams; and piers. The temporary false work for the arch was designed to limit settlement and movement while supporting over 600 tons of arch concrete during placement. The project included roadwork, pavement, landscape, lighting and a granite terrace. Approximately 35 miles of post-tensioning strand was installed to reinforce the unique concrete arch structure.
